The UK’s AI copyright climbdown is good news for creators — but it still leaves plenty unresolved

The UK government has backed away from its earlier position on AI and copyright after a fierce response from musicians, writers, publishers and other creative groups. One reason the debate gets muddled is that it is often framed as artists versus progress. That is too simplistic. Plenty of creators and small businesses already use AI for brainstorming, admin, editing and routine tasks. Used sensibly, these tools can save time. Uncertainty remains. The government has not committed to a clear replacement plan. It still wants to balance the needs of the creative sector with the UK’s ambition to grow AI adoption quickly. Tech groups argue that AI firms need access to large amounts of high-quality material if the UK wants to stay competitive. Creative groups argue that existing copyright law is already clear enough: if you want to use protected work, ask and pay.

There is room for compromise here. Licensing schemes, collective rights management and clearer disclosure rules could all help. But that only works if the starting point is genuine permission and transparency, not “use first, object later”.

Some AI products genuinely help with drafting, summarising or organising work. Others are powered by shaky assumptions about consent, ownership and originality.
