A London AI company says banks can now give ordinary customers something that used to feel more like a private-banking perk: an always-available account manager that can talk through problems, follow procedures and handle more of the messy admin behind the scenes. In practice, that means AI systems designed to deal with issues like a stolen card, a blocked payment, an account check or a complaint without bouncing you between quite so many queues.
That will sound promising to anyone who has spent half a lunch break trying to sort out a card problem. It will also make plenty of people uneasy, and fairly so. Money is not the place most of us want clever-sounding guesswork. As with other AI tools that ask for more access and autonomy, the real test is whether it stays useful, challengeable and under human control when the stakes rise.
What has actually been announced
OpenAI this week highlighted Gradient Labs, a London-based company founded by people who previously worked on AI and data at Monzo. The pitch is that banks can use AI agents to handle complicated support journeys that follow strict procedures, not just simple chatbot FAQs. OpenAI says the system is being used for cases such as stolen cards, verification checks, disputes and fraud-related workflows, with guardrails running in parallel to detect things like advice requests, complaints, vulnerability signals and attempts to bypass security.
Gradient Labs’ own site says its support agent is built specifically for financial services and aims to resolve customer queries end to end rather than just handling the easiest questions. In other words, this is not being sold as a novelty chatbot. It is being sold as a serious layer in customer service.
That does not mean your bank has suddenly handed your finances to a robot. But it does show where the industry is heading. NatWest’s latest annual results already say AI is being used to speed up complaint handling, summarisation and colleague workflows, with the bank saying automated summarisation and AI-generated complaint responses are saving around 90,000 hours a year. So even if this exact “AI account manager” idea is new, the broader shift is already under way.
Why some customers may genuinely like it
The best case for this kind of banking AI is pretty simple. If it cuts waiting time, keeps the story straight and gets routine fixes done at 9pm without a hold queue, that is useful. Many people do not want a warm relationship with their bank; they want fast answers, clear next steps and fewer transfers between departments.
There is also a fairness angle here. Banks have long reserved the most joined-up service for wealthier customers or business accounts with relationship managers. If AI makes decent, consistent support available to everyone, that could be one of the more defensible uses of the technology. But a faster wrong answer is still a wrong answer.
What UK customers should check before trusting it
First, work out whether you are getting support or advice. There is a big difference between “your replacement card should arrive in three to five days” and “this is the best financial decision for you”. If the conversation drifts towards budgeting, borrowing, investments or anything that sounds like personalised financial advice, slow down. A polished chatbot voice does not turn a support tool into a regulated adviser.
Second, make sure you are in a real bank channel. The FCA’s scam guidance is blunt about this: treat unexpected calls, texts and emails with caution, do not let yourself be rushed, and do not share passwords or card details unless you are certain who you are dealing with. If an “AI banking assistant” appears through a link in a message, that is a reason to be more careful, not less. Start from your bank’s official app or website instead.
Third, check how quickly a human can step in. AI may be fine for a card freeze, a balance question or a missing transfer update. It is less reassuring when the issue involves fraud losses, a bereavement, financial vulnerability, or a complaint that needs judgement rather than a script. A good rollout should make escalation easier, not hide it behind three more layers of automated cheerfulness.
Fourth, ask what the system is using to make sense of you. The whole point of an “account manager” style AI is memory and context. That can be handy if it means you do not have to repeat yourself. It can also feel invasive if you do not know what history is being pulled in, how long it is kept, or whether a summary has flattened something important. We have already seen with other AI products that labels and safety claims are not the same thing as clear user understanding.
Fifth, keep your own record. If the AI confirms a card block, payment dispute, complaint reference or promised callback, take a screenshot or jot down the details. Banking mistakes are stressful enough without arguing later about what the bot said on Tuesday night.
The sensible middle ground
The calm view is that banking AI could be genuinely helpful, especially for repetitive admin that currently wastes everyone’s time. But it is best treated like a front desk, not a trusted family adviser. Let it help with navigation and straightforward tasks. Do not assume it fully understands nuance just because it sounds smooth.
If banks get this right, ordinary customers may spend less time waiting on hold and more time getting actual problems solved. If they get it wrong, people will end up trapped in a more polished version of the same old loop. The difference will come down to clear limits, visible escalation routes and a bank that remembers trust is harder to rebuild than a workflow.
